Changing health insurer: steps and conditions
Source text as of 2 September 2026 · General information
When switching between statutory health insurers, you usually choose the new fund directly. It informs your previous insurer; a separate cancellation is normally unnecessary.
Documents and information to prepare
- ID and current address
- Insurance number and current insurer’s details
- Steuer-ID and social insurance number if the new insurer requests them
- Employer details or information about benefits received
- Desired change date
- Family members covered under your policy
- Evidence of special status such as student, pensioner or self-employed where relevant
- Documents for an existing optional tariff (Wahltarif), which may have its own binding period
Important to know
Choosing an insurer generally creates a 12-month binding period. An increase in the additional contribution may allow a special switch. Tell your employer about the new insurer as soon as possible.
